Relation To Books Westminster Confession Of Faith w/ Catechisms (1646-7) (and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, Directories for Public and Private Worship, Form of Presbyterial Church Government, the Sum of Saving Knowledge)
The Westminster Confession of Faith is the greatest of all the creeds of the Christian Church. Since its first publication in 1646 it has remained absolutely unsurpassed as an accurate and concise statement of Christian doctrine. Among all the shifting sands of theological opinion here is solid truth, for it has its foundation in the unchanging truth of Scripture--witness the copious references from the Bible which are printed on each page. Because of its faithfulness to Scripture the Confession has permanent worth and abiding relevance. The Church of Christ cannot be creedless and live. Especially in an age of doubt and confusion, it is her duty to define the Christian faith and to proclaim it to the world. Nowhere has the Reformed Church done this so effectively as in The Westminster Confession of Faith. While always recognising the supreme place of the Word of God in all matters of faith and practice, one can always turn to the Confession as one's subordinate standard. Here readers will find spiritual treasure; here too they will find comfort and strength. Also contained in this volume are the magnificent Larger and Shorter Catechisms, The Sum of Saving Knowledge, The National Covenant, The Solemn League and Covenant, The Directory for the Public Worship of God, The Form of Presbyterial Church Government, and The Directory for Family Worship.Rating Epithetical Books Westminster Confession Of Faith w/ Catechisms (1646-7) (and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, Directories for Public and Private Worship, Form of Presbyterial Church Government, the Sum of Saving Knowledge)

Rereading now that my first year of teaching has concluded. This time I'm struck by the documents' participation in an old and venerable philosophical and theological tradition. The authors belong to the same thought-world as my pagan, Catholic, and Protestant heroes, though they frequently disagree on particulars. As before, I am frequently unconvinced by the "Scripture Proofs" in the Confession. I skipped the Scripture Proofs in the two Catechisms. This omnibus contains the Metrical Psalter and the full text and notes to:1. The WCF2. Both Catechisms3. All three parts of the Sum of Saving Knowledge4. The National Covenant and all related Acts of Parliament5. The Solemn League and Covenant (ditto) - 4,5 foundational documents of Covenanter political theology6. The Directory of Public Worship7. The Directory of Private Worship8. The Presbyteral Form of Government
Outside of scripture, the wisdom per words used ratio could hardly be higher. Clear, concise, powerful, enduring.
What a rich summary of the Presbyterian faith. There is so much wisdom in having this layed out so clearly and beautifully. We read the confession aloud in the mornings at breakfast, a blessed way to start the day.
Actually read all the way through the whole thing, extra confessional documents and all. I even read all the pre-ambles to all the documents! Now, that is an accomplishment, especially given the fact that some of it is written in prosaic 17th century legal jargon. But it was great to finally read through the Solemn League and Covenant, the Directory for Public Worship, etc. There's plenty of wisdom to be found in these documents. The most amazing thing to me about this whole endeavor though, is

i actually enjoyed reading this book. it really helped me cement my faith in Jesus Christ. i now know why i believe what i believe. i loved the proof texts in this book -- if i was ever unsure about something i was able to read commentary or use Scripture to help me understand.
